MOUTH BURNS
Burning the roof of the mouth or tongue is a very common problem. A bite into a sizzling slice of pizza, sip of a piping hot beverage or taste of steamy, oven-fresh food can result in a searing burn scorching the oral tissue. The skin on the hard palate, also known as the roof of the mouth, is hypersensitive, thin & delicate to savor the sensations of eating & drinking. Consuming fats, oils & liquids that can hold heat for a long time - before they have had time to cool - can result in mouth burns that kill skin cells. Most burns on the roof of the mouth are first & second-degree burns. First-degree burns typically take around 1 week to heal. While healing, the oral tissue is painful & swollen causing difficulty to eat. Medical Links: Learn More > Learn More >
BURNING MOUTH SYNDROME
Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is ongoing (chronic) or recurrent burning in the mouth without an obvious cause. This discomfort may affect the tongue, gums, lips, inside of your cheeks, roof of your mouth (palate) or widespread areas. The burning sensation can be severe, like scalded your mouth. According to the Genetic & Rare Diseases Center, the primary form of BMS results from damage to the nerves that control taste & pain sensations. Secondary BMS may occur because of: allergies to foods/dental products; anxiety; depression; diabetes; dry mouth; gastro esophageal reflux disease; under active thyroid; medications; mouth infections or nutritional deficiencies. Symptoms may include: burning or scalding sensation; dry mouth with increased thirst; taste changes in your mouth (bitter/metallic taste); loss of taste; tingling, stinging or numbness in your mouth. ORAL THRUSH
Thrush is a medical condition in which a yeast-like fungus called Candida albicans overgrows in the mouth & throat. This causes creamy white lesions, usually on the tongue & inner cheeks, that may spread to the roof of the mouth, gums, throat or tonsils. It is more common with babies & older adults because they have reduced immunity.

Causes may include: Weaken immune system or illness, pregnancy, medication side effects, smoking, dentures or cancer treatments. Medical Link, Learn More >
